Install MediaTomb
« on: August 20, 2011, 04:32:29 AM »
1) Obtain SSH access to the IX2-200. There are many posts on this elsewhere. Go to the settings tab of the interface. Change settings.html to support.html in address bar of your web browser. Enable support access (SSH).

2) SSH to the IX2-200. login is 'root', pw is 'soho(your_admin_password)'.

3) Install MediaTomb via ipkg, which is native on the IX2-200. See here:http://vuksan.com/blog/2010/04/28/customizing-iomega-storcenter-ix4-200d-with-ipkg/. Type:

Code: [Select]
cat <<EOF > /etc/ipkg.conf
src cross http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs08q1armel/cross/unstable
src native http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs08q1armel/native/unstable
EOF
ipkg update
ipkg list | less
ipkg install mediatomb

4) This installs mediatomb to /opt/bin/mediatomb. Read the mediatomb wiki if you need to tweak settings. http://mediatomb.cc/

5) Start the mediatomb server.
Code: [Select]
cd /opt/bin
./mediatomb

6) The server will start and give you a web address with a port, i.e. http://192.168.1.104:49152. That's how you add files to the media server.

7) Close your ssh program, leaving the server active. FYI, you can close the media server with Ctrl-C if you're still on that screen, or afterwards from the command line with 'killall mediatomb', but we want to leave it running.

8) Go to any web browser on a computer in your intranet, and type the address with the port that mediatomb gave you earlier. You should see the mediatomb interface.

9) You can now add files to the media server! Click on Filesystem, then browse to your files. They're in mnt/soho_sotrage/samba/shares. Highlight your media directory, then click the plus sign on the right window.

10) Mediatomb will add all the files to the server. It takes a while the first time around, because it sorts MP3s by metadata so you can browse by artist, etc. But unlike the IX2-200's built-in server, it eventually finishes after an hour or so

11) You should be able to access all your files as before, but now the disks will be quiet, and they even spin down!!! Ahh... peace and quiet. Tested with my PS3, and works great. Read the mediatomb wiki on further configuration, how to add auto-refresh of files to the media server, etc.
